Kids Up Front Drama AcademyBuilding life skills through drama

Why drama classes?

The aim of Kids Up Front Drama Academy is to provide a fun and dynamic drama program that develops Self-Confidence, Communication Skills and Creativity in children.

The lessons include specific activities to help children develop their verbal skills, voice projection, creative movement, and spontaneity through improvisation and performance skills. Lessons are carefully planned to provide an hour of stimulating and educational FUN!

The drama class is a personal experience for each individual and is therefore not a graded or competitive activity. As the program is designed to build and extend skills the best results are achieved when students continue classes over a period of time.

Juniors (Lower Primary - K to Yr 2 - ages 5 to 8 years)

Our junior class program offers young children an opportunity to take part in a themed lesson each week. Themes such as Dinosaurs, Pirates, Animals, Space, Toys and Under the Sea stimulate young children’s imaginations and interest to participate in a variety of drama activities that include warm up games, speech and vocal work, movement and scene work.

These learning activities, which feel like playing to the children, help them become confident in presenting their own ideas and also to work as part of a team.

Children learn to accept and extend each other’s ideas. Developing good social skills and confidence in presenting their own ideas is an important tool in this critical stage of early school life.

Seniors (Upper Primary - Yrs 3 to 6 - ages 9 to 12 years)

The program for this age group continues to build on skills developed in the junior classes through improvisation and scripted work. Performance skills are honed through a stimulating range of drama activities such as improvisation, theatre games, miming, play building, scene work and scripted performances.

Play-building is a process where ideas for stories, characters and dialogue are work shopped for students to develop their own play. This creative process enables students to claim ownership of their own character and the play.

Improvisation games challenge students to use quick thinking and spontaneity as they respond to each other’s ideas and extend them instantaneously.

Our Annual Concert held in term 4 at the Zenith Theatre is a highlight for the senior group. Children start preparation for their item in term 3 and work with a script towards an evening concert performance held in term 4 with all the theatrics of lighting, costumes, stage make-up and sound effects.
